In Sherlock Holmes Canon who is older: Holmes or Watson?

In movie and tv portrayals (and there have been many) sometimes Holmes is older sometimes Watson is older, sometimes they are about the same age. But who is suppose to be older according to the books? I have read quite a few of the stories and have never figured out who was suppose to be oldest.
