Discuss Boethius and Dante portrayals of how and why we lose our way?

Boethius and Dante faced crises in their lives that forced them to re evaluate the way they had been thinking and living. their writings reveal that they look upon each of us as someday facing a crisis of our own. they warn that we could become "lost souls", wandering the earth looking for the way home. How do you think their portrayals of how and why we lose our way and the means by which it is possible for us to find our way back to the path that will lead us home.
