What Are American High Schools Really Like?

I'm British and I've basically grown up with American teen shows set in high schools with all the different social groups and the hierarchy etc. I was wondering what American high school is really like, how realistic or exaggerated that portrayal is. Never having been inside one and not knowing anyone who has I wouldn't know.
