Why is the color black globally accepted as a portrayal of evil?

Globally?? I only know about historically, but I don't think this is true because historically Black has NOT represented evil. In Ancient times in many places it actually represented fertility (Egypt) and in parts of Asia White is the color that represented death - hence when people die they get whiter.
