Was this wrong and is it not valid?

While on vacation there were large groups of people participating in group activities. One man had a shirt professing his atheist religion. During the activities people were asked which city they hailed from and he said Pittsburgh and I simply asked him his place of origin. He looked terribly confused for a few moments before mumbling Pennsylvania. Is THIS an accurate portrayal of atheist thought? Should I have been less concerned about his religion and just left him alone? Thanks. God Bless
