Why do so many people hate Scarlette O'Hara?

I just watched the movie and it seems like people think she's so terrible, but she wasn't that bad. She was just like every spoiled, teenaged girl who was high-maintenance. I mean, she was a snob and stuck-up, but that doesn't equate to being evil or mean. Snobbery doesn't mean assholery. I thought Scarlet was a sympathetic character going through love and trying to find her own identity. I always felt like Scarlet wasn't happy with her lifestyle and just wanted to have freedom since her mammy was always telling her to act like a proper lady. That's why I like Gone With The Wind, because it's realistic in the portrayals of love and relationships and how something you can be deeply in love with someone, but that's not enough.
