If someone attempted suicide, how long would the hospital keep them?

It depends on the state law. The states I have worked in have had a mandatory 72 hour hold, and I think that is pretty standard in most places. If after the 72 hours they feel the person is still a danger to themselves or others, that hold can be extended. In extreme circumstances they can be placed in long term holds to help medications have time to start working.
